January 17, 2012

Our January Board meeting was delayed until the 24th so I cannot give you the usual update of what the meeting
covered.

Did you notice the new bulletin board just as you enter the sanctuary? This bulletin board will have volunteer opportunities listed, including Sunday morning slots for ushers, greeters and hospitality. Feel free to sign up often!

We had a very unusual worship service on January 1. If you missed this lovely event I would like to take a minute to
describe it to you. Rev. Wendy planned a short service in Sutherland Hall. We all sat in an open circle. John Chapman filled the hall with great music. We heard the story of “Stone Soup” and acted out the story filling a pot with the vegetables and grains that we brought from home to make our own Stone Soup. After the service, while the soup was cooking, about 30 people helped to make dinner for the Community Café. The menu was turkey pot pie, roasted vegetables, bread and brownies. The kitchen was filled with people washing and cutting the turkey (which the Fredericks had donated, and Susie Macrae roasted) and vegetables (many from Wendy’s winter CSA). Brownies and topping for the pot pie were made at a station in Sutherland Hall. In under an hour we filled the ovens. Then we sat down together to eat our simple and tasty Stone Soup. That night 4 volunteers served about 50 people (including take-home dinners) at the Community Café. We collected compliments about the delicious food. What a wonderful way to welcome in the New Year. I hope this becomes an annual tradition at HUUC.

Speaking of annual traditions, our first annual Indoor Yard Sale is coming up on January 28 (snow date February 4) from 12:30-4:30. Response to this event has been terrific. We have sold all the tables we can fit in the Fellowship Building. If you have anything to contribute to the Church Tables, where all of the profits will go to HUUC, please contact me. I will store everything in our barn. Another way to support this event is to come and buy things! Tell your friends about it; bring them along.

On a similar topic (raising money for the church….) please do remember to get your pledge forms in. The Stewardship Committee is very pleased to say that all of the buckets are back, but quite a few envelopes have not yet been returned.

Take Joy!
