The popular Triple Helix Piano Trio returns to Harvard. Violinist Bayla Keyes, cellist Rhonda Rider, and pianist Lois Shapiro have a splendid chemistry, dynamic balance, and a firm collective sense of rhythm.

George Li, Pianist

Music by Franz Joseph Haydn, Robert Schumann, Bela Bartok, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert

Young pianist George Li won the coveted Young Concert Artists International award last fall, at the age of 15, a year younger than the usual age acceptance for the auditions. Last summer he played in the White House Rose Garden for the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. This season he has won wide acclaim in his solo performances at Merkin Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., with the BSO in Boston. He is a member of the New England Conservatory’s Vivaci Trio, which has played on From the Top on NPR. He attends the Walnut Hill School for the Arts and studies piano with Wha Kyung Byun.

Ted Johnson, Jim Phelan and Friends – Organ and Brass

Ted Johnson is the music director and organist at the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church. Previously, Ted served as music director and organist at the Winchester Unitarian Society. Before moving to New England in 1991, Ted served churches in southern California as organist and associate director and was active in the American Guild of Organists. He is presently on staff at Brandeis University.
 
Jim Phelan is an active horn soloist and chamber music performer both in the United States and abroad. Through the year he plays horn with the Massachusetts Symphony and Concord Orchestra.

Sarah Whitney, Violin
Accompanist Natalia Lavrova

Sarah Whitney spent her early years in Harvard, then moved to Concord, MA. Now based in New York City, she is currently a violinist with sybarite5, a group dedicated to broadening the string quintet repertoire and commissioning new works. Sybarite5 has performed at the Aspen Music Festival, including appearances on the CBS Early Morning Show, as well as opening for An Evening of Words and Music with Condoleezza Rice. The quintet performs throughout New York City, including a recent concert at Lincoln Center.

As a soloist, Sarah has explored many different genres. In addition to classical music as guest artist for the Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland Composer’s Guild, and Memphis Chamber Music society, she has done Klezmer violin with David Krakauer at Carnegie Hall, and been featured live on stage with Bobby McFerrin, Anne Murray, Doc Severinsen, and Rockstar Supernova. The Hirsch-Pinkas Piano Duo

Since 1992 the Hirsch-Pinkas Piano duo has been presenting one and two-piano recitals to enthusiastic audiences throughout the world. Sally Pinkas and her husband Evan Hirsch, each an active soloist, bring to their collaborations virtuosity, enthusiasm, and striking warmth.  Dedicated to an exploration of twentieth century music, they are equally at ease with the standard repertoire, from Byrd to Mozart to Rachmaninoff. They often include works especially arranged by Hirsch. Popular with young audiences, they frequently present Master classes in conjunction with their concerts.

Hirsch and Pinkas regularly perform in Italy, have been in residence at the Kfar Blum Music Festival in Israel, have toured Nigeria, and performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and France. Please visit their website for further information.

The Dearing Concert Duo
Soprano, Flute, Classical Guitar

The Dearing concert Duo formed in 1998, after Abha and Steven became partners in marriage. They have performed across the United States, Canada, England, and Scotland. Their three critically acclaimed CDs are heard on radio stations across the UK and North America, and they have performed on American Public Television and CBC television.

Abha has a gorgeous soprano voice and also plays flute. She has concertized in many countries around the world in both Western and East Indian styles of music. Steven plays a mean classical guitar. They specialize in Spanish and Latin music and composers DeFalla, Rodrigo,Villa Lobos, Piazolla, Pujoi, and more. For more information see the Dearings' website.

Chad is a master of his instrument and routinely hailed for his infectious enthusiasm and exacting virtuosity. Equally at home with lesser-known gems, as well as the standard repertoire, his performances have brought him to cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe including Toronto, Washington DC, Columbus, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Toulouse and Montréal. His many recital appearances as a soloist and chamber musician have seen him in colleges and universities across the U.S., the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the La Gesse Festival in France. His recitals often feature commentary from the stage, something that his audiences have responded to very favorably.

I'Estro Armonica:
Héloïse Degruillier on recorder
Paul Cienniwa on harpsichord

Héloïse and Paul have been performing together in the Boston and Newport areas since 2007. Their 2009 concert for the Boston Early Music festival won them praise in the American Recorder Society and the classical music blog Soho the Dog.

Héloïse has worked extensively as both a recorder performer and teacher throughout Europe and the United States. She has performed with leading period ensembles, including the Boston Early Music Festival Opera, Newport Baroque, Harmonious Blacksmith, the Dunya Ensemble and L’Academic. She teaches with the Boston Recorder society, Recorder Guild of New York, Pinewoods and others. She has a Masters in Music from the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands, and is an Alexander Technique graduate.

Paul has recently performed at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Yale University, Harvard University, MIT, the Kingston Chamber Music festival, and in Chicago. He was hailed by critics for his performance and direction of Handel’s Alcina for the Boston Opera Collaborative. His undergraduate work was done at DePaul University, and he received the doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University.
