Buddha Tuesdays
Third Tuesday of each month, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
First Meeting: September 19th
A small group for the practice of sitting meditation and the study of simple (but not always easy!) Buddhist teachings with relevance for our lives. Each meeting will include a brief period of meditation, a short reading, some conversation based on the reading, and another short period of meditation. We'll begin the year with short selections from Pema Chodron's The Places that Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times. Come to one session or come to all. No reading or preparation required. Just come, when you do, with a willingness to sit in silence for a time, to listen to the week's reading and to each other, and, if you wish, to share in the conversation. When you do come, please be prepared to start at 7:00 p.m.

An Inconvenient Truth: Film and Conversation
Friday night, October 6th, 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
"From director Davis Guggenheim comes the Sundance Film Festival hit, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man’s (Al Gore’s) fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it."

Come see the film for the first time or for the second…or third…and join in the conversation, which will follow the screening. All are welcome! Free admission! There may even be popcorn!

What the Waters Revealed
Four Thursday afternoons, 3:30 to 5:30
October 26, November 2, November 9, November 16
"In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, deep issues of race and poverty became a central part of the national conversation. Can the truths revealed by Katrina lead to real change?"

Each week we will read and discuss articles written in the aftermath of Katrina that explore issues of race and poverty and how we are called – as people of faith – to respond to injustice. Call the church office by October 23rd to register and get copies of the first week’s readings.

Renewal: Not Just for Ministers Anymore!
David Rynick, a long-time UU and member of First Unitarian in Worcester, is also a professional Life Coach and a Zen Master. He has worked with our congregation twice before on the topic of The Spiritual Practice of Hospitality and on the Art of Welcoming, with wildly enthusiastic response! And so, we've invited him back to join us as a consultant during this Sabbatical and Renewal year to be an ongoing presence with the congregation as we focus together on the question of "What Makes Our Heart Sing?" We encourage everyone to take advantage of David's presence with us throughout the year so that we can all reap the benefits of this Renewal Time.

New UU
This will be an opportunity for people who are new to our church and to Unitarian Universalism to gather together, begin to get to know each other, and learn a little bit about Unitarian Universalist history, the history of this church, the Unitarian Universalist Principles and Sources, and our church's Mission and Covenant Statement.

Join Rev. Wendy for an informal introduction of Unitarian Universalism - our history, our principles, our sources – and to this congregation. Ours is a non-creedal religion, meaning that we are not bound by a common set of beliefs or dogma. Come learn about what brings us together, what holds us together, and how we work together. A light lunch will be served.

Path to Membership
This will be an opportunity for people who've already attended a "New UU" class or who already have a pretty good sense of "the basics" of Unitarian Universalism to get together and "go deeper." During this class we will have a chance to delve more deeply into the seven Principles and the Mission and Covenant Statement and what they mean to each of us; to take the church's Gifts Inventory in order to learn more about who we are and what we each have to offer others; to learn more about the ministries of the church and about how to get involved; and to consider what it means to become a member of our church and how to join. This class would be appropriate for anyone, including those who've "been around for a while," but who haven't yet become members and would like to learn more about what membership.
